M5 Max Mac Studio: A Power Leap Over M1 Max With Thunderbolt 5 and AI Acceleration
Apple's M5 Max Mac Studio is a major upgrade over the M1 Max, using an 18‑core CPU (12 performance cores and six 'super' cores) and 32‑ or 40‑core GPUs with Neural Accelerators and hardware‑accelerated ray tracing. It delivers significantly stronger performance across CPU, GPU, and AI workloads (Apple cites up to 2.2x GPU and up to sixfold AI improvements), aided by higher memory bandwidth (up to 614 GB/s), RDMA-enabled Thunderbolt 5, and Wi‑Fi 7. The chassis remains the same, but the new model starts at $2,499 and can reach $8,899 with upgrades, with memory/storage upgrades notably pricier than the M1 Max. It also supports clustering multiple units for AI tasks and can drive up to five displays. Overall, the M5 Max Mac Studio is a substantial jump in power and connectivity, making the M1 Max feel dated by comparison—worth it if you need the performance; otherwise, an older used M1 Max may be a bargain.
