Scientists may have solved the mystery of the "magic islands" on Saturn's moon Titan, which are bright spots observed on its hydrocarbon seas. Initially thought to be waves, nitrogen bubbles, or floating solids, new research suggests they are large chunks of porous organic solids, similar to pumice on Earth, that float due to their structure allowing methane to seep in. This explanation also accounts for the unusual smoothness of Titan's liquid bodies, providing insights into two of Titan's enigmas in one study. The findings are published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
