Former New Mexico House Leader Convicted on Federal Education Fraud Charges
A federal jury has convicted former New Mexico House Majority Leader Sheryl Williams Stapleton on all counts of bribery, mail fraud, and money laundering. The verdict concludes a trial regarding an eight-year scheme to divert millions of dollars from Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) to a private company and personal businesses. Stapleton, a former Democratic representative for District 19, faces federal prison time after prosecutors alleged she colluded with Jeff Johnson, owner of Robotics Management Learning Systems, to siphon federal and state education funds.
