Wrong Place, Wrong Labels: State Dept Map Mislabels Africa at AIDS Conference
At the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio, a State Department slide mislabelled Africa, putting Nigeria (where the U.S. has troops) in the Sahara, Mozambique in the Horn of Africa, and Ivory Coast on the far side of the continent; Reuters found the image bore an AI watermark suggesting OpenAI tools were used. The department apologized, saying a team member hastily updated the slide, and noted that despite the slip, PEPFAR work continues and discussions remained substantive.
