Episcopal Bishop Budde to Step Down in 2028 After Public Feud With Trump
Mariann Edgar Budde, the first woman to serve as Episcopal bishop of Washington, has announced her resignation, effective June 3, 2028. Budde, who has led the diocese since 2011, cited a discernment process with church leadership as the reason for her departure. Her tenure gained national attention in January 2025 when she urged President Donald Trump to show mercy to immigrants and LGBTQ+ individuals during his second inauguration prayer service. Trump publicly demanded an apology, criticizing her tone and competence. The diocese will hold a convention to elect her successor on January 29, 2028. Budde plans to return to her home state of Minnesota after her tenure ends.
