Guatemalan construction worker dies in crash after fleeing ICE agents in Grand Rapids
Mario David Coronado Juárez, a 36-year-old Guatemalan construction worker, died after crashing his car into a tree and catching fire while fleeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Sunday, September 20. The crash occurred near Century Avenue and McKendrick Street at approximately 7:10 a.m. Coronado was the sole occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered an independent review of the law enforcement actions, and Michigan State Police are assisting Grand Rapids police with the investigation. Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.) has demanded answers from ICE, while advocacy groups and the Guatemalan consulate are seeking justice and coordinating repatriation for Coronado’s family in Guatemala.
