Michigan officials demand transparency after Guatemalan worker dies in crash following ICE traffic stop
Mario David Coronado Juarez, a 36-year-old Guatemalan construction worker, died after his car crashed into a tree and caught fire while fleeing an attempted traffic stop by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Sunday. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and local police chief Joseph Trigg have ordered an independent investigation by the Michigan State Police, citing limited access to federal information. ICE defended its actions, stating the driver fled at high speed and agents discontinued the pursuit for public safety. The incident occurred alongside other ICE-related incidents in Texas and Illinois, prompting demands for accountability from Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups.
