Iran presses for full Hormuz oversight as Oman proposes shared control
Iran rejected Oman’s 50-50 joint-control proposal for the Strait of Hormuz and put forward a counterplan that would keep one route entirely within Iranian waters (with part of the opposite lane also passing through Iranian waters) to allow Tehran oversight of traffic. Oman’s plan envisioned a 50-50 split with routes entering through Iran and exiting via Oman, modeled on the Strait of Malacca and backed by some regional support, including GCC discussions. The talks remain part of broader disputes over lane directions, tolls, mine clearance, and who defines the final arrangements, amid ongoing US-Israeli–Iran tensions and questions about how much the strait should be paid for through funding mechanisms.
