LA Mayor Karen Bass ordered the LAPD to stop giving criminal citations to street vendors and to remove any charges issued in error, as she seeks citywide safeguards for vendors. The move comes amid a competitive mayoral race with opponent Nithya Raman proposing a pro-vendor plan that includes permits, microloans, and designated vending zones to integrate vendors with brick‑and‑mortar businesses.
A last-minute agreement averted a district-wide strike in Los Angeles Unified after Local 99 reached a contract for about 30,000 support staff, with separate deals for teachers and administrators following. The settlements include an average 24% raise for support staff over two years, about 14% for teachers, and over 11% for administrators, plus expanded hours to meet health-insurance thresholds, brokered in part by Mayor Karen Bass. The move preserves classes for roughly 400,000 students across LA’s schools.
