Toledo chemical leak forces mass evacuations and cross-state shelter orders
A hazardous material release at the MC Tank Terminal in North Toledo, Ohio, triggered a one-mile evacuation and a three-mile shelter-in-place order on October 21. The incident, involving the chemical glycidyl methacrylate, forced hundreds of residents to seek shelter and caused school closures in Ohio and Michigan. While officials initially described the event as an explosion, subsequent reports clarified it was a leak during a transfer. No fatalities were reported, but residents experienced irritation, and visibility was reduced by fog and the chemical plume.
