"FDA Issues Urgent Recall for Philips Medical Imaging Devices Over Explosion Risk"
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall of Philips' medical imaging devices as the most serious, as their use could lead to serious injuries or death. The recall is due to the risk of explosion during a "quench procedure" caused by excessive buildup of helium gas. Philips has already recalled 150 devices in the United States and is in the process of inspecting the remaining systems. The use of the affected devices may result in adverse health consequences, including chemical exposure and tissue damage. There has been one reported event of an explosion in 22 years of use, but no reports of injury or death. Philips has also faced a global recall of millions of respirators used to treat sleep apnea.
