AI-Driven Demand Upsets Micron’s Memory-Cycle Playbook

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says AI has permanently altered the memory market’s boom-bust cycles, with data-center buyers seeking roughly 50% more supply than Micron can commit and long-term contracts replacing volatile spot pricing. In response, Micron pledges a $250 billion U.S. manufacturing build-out through 2035 (including two Boise fabs) and a $10 billion Micron Research Labs, backed by Nvidia and Apple, to capitalize on sustained AI-driven demand. However, a bear case cautions that history shows memory upcycles can overshoot, and the new capacity won’t arrive quickly enough to resolve today’s shortage ( Boise first wafer mid-2027; second 2028), potentially limiting near-term profit upside.
