Ukrainian forces struck multiple Russian targets, including a radar station in Kartushin, an electronic warfare system near Pogar, and a MESH network repeater in Zlynka, plus a repair facility in Sokolohirsk, Luhansk; damage is being assessed, with prior strikes on a drone launch site and recon/communications equipment noted.
The rollout of Thread 1.4, which allows border routers from different manufacturers to join existing Thread networks, is delayed until at least 2026, causing fragmentation in smart home device connectivity. Apple is set to implement Thread 1.4 with tvOS 26 this fall, but other major players like Google, Amazon, and Samsung are still on Thread 1.3, with support expected next year. This delay prolongs the current issues of multiple separate Thread networks in homes, but the standard aims to unify these for a more reliable and extensive mesh network.
This article discusses different ways to boost your WiFi signal in your home, including using a powerline adapter or a WiFi extender. A powerline adapter uses your existing electrical wiring to extend the network signal, while a WiFi extender amplifies and retransmits the internet signal from the router. Both options have their pros and cons, with the powerline adapter offering a more stable and faster connection, and the WiFi extender being easier to set up. Another option mentioned is upgrading to a mesh network, which provides better coverage and performance but can be more expensive and complex to set up. Ultimately, the choice depends on the specific needs and setup of your home.
Amazon has unveiled the Eero Max 7, a WiFi device that combines a router, range extender, and repeater, offering 10-gigabit Ethernet speeds. The device, priced at $600, is designed for large homes, businesses, and high-demand networks. It supports multiple radio bands and can provide wireless coverage for up to 2,500 square feet. Eero devices can be connected to create a mesh network for improved range and performance. Amazon acquired Eero in 2019 and has integrated it with its Echo Dot speakers.
Chinese state-sponsored hacking group Mustang Panda, also known as Camaro Dragon, has been linked to a new set of targeted attacks on European foreign affairs entities using a custom firmware implant designed for TP-Link routers. The implant features a backdoor named 'Horse Shell' that enables the attackers to maintain persistent access, build anonymous infrastructure, and enable lateral movement into compromised networks. The router backdoor is believed to target arbitrary devices on residential and home networks, suggesting that the compromised routers are being co-opted into a mesh network with the goal of creating a "chain of nodes between main infections and real command-and-control."
Google's Nest WiFi system, a mesh network option, is on sale on Amazon. A two-pack of the Nest WiFi system has dropped to $100, which is the lowest price to date. The two-pack includes a router and a point, while a three-pack is also on sale. Each Nest router and point can connect to as many as 100 devices simultaneously. Those looking for a higher-end option might want to consider the Nest WiFi Pro 6E system, which offers faster speeds and lower latencies than WiFi 6 and earlier standards.
