Spain paves way for legal status for about half a million migrants
Spain's government approved a plan to grant about 500,000 undocumented migrants a one-year renewable residence permit, open to those who have lived in Spain for at least five months and have a clean criminal record, with applications from April 16 to June 30. The measure aims to integrate migrants into the economy and public services amid an aging population, drawing support from the Catholic Church and opposition from the PP, which says it rewards illegal migration.
