Sweetney’s enduring legacy in Jewish basketball and Yeshiva University
Former Knicks first-round pick Mike Sweetney died at 43 and left a lasting impact on Jewish and Yeshiva University basketball, mentoring players, coaching at Yeshiva from 2019 to 2022, and remaining deeply involved with the community and its camps and outreach, with teammates noting his care and generosity extended far beyond the court. Under his brief coaching tenure, the Maccabees compiled a strong record and a Sweet 16 run in 2020 before the season was halted by the pandemic.
