Minnesota's Temporary School Calendar Flexibility Sparks Debate Over Labor Day Tradition
Minnesota lawmakers granted a temporary exception to the 40-year-old law requiring schools to start after Labor Day, allowing districts to begin classes as early as September 1 for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. Forty-two districts utilized this flexibility, while major Twin Cities districts retained traditional schedules. The move aims to prevent school years from extending into late June due to the late Labor Day date, but it has reignited a broader debate about whether local control over school calendars should become permanent, balancing educational needs against tourism and summer employment concerns.
