UK sees first births using DNA from three people in innovative IVF procedure.
The first babies with DNA from three people have been born in the UK using an innovative IVF procedure called mitochondrial donation treatment (MDT) to prevent rare genetic diseases. The technique uses tissue from the eggs of healthy female donors to create IVF embryos without harmful mutations mothers would otherwise pass on to their children. The UK became the first country to permit the procedure in 2015, and Newcastle University is the only center authorized to perform it. The number of births is "less than five" to avoid identifying the families involved.
