Rain Paintings Pioneer Lucien Smith Dies at 37
Lucien Smith, the New York artist behind the signature Rain Paintings, has died at 37. His distinctive spray-paint works helped define a key era in the city’s early-2010s art scene, with record auction prices and gallery acclaim. He also founded the Serving the People nonprofit to support emerging creatives, later relocating to Montauk and revisiting Rain Paintings for a show at Tripoli Gallery. Smith died on Sept. 7, with a cause not publicly disclosed, and news was confirmed by gallerist Bill Powers.
