LSU Athletics Faces $26 Million Deficit as Direct Athlete Pay Collides with Years of Overspending
LSU President Wade Rousse informed the Louisiana Board of Regents that the athletic department is projected to finish the current fiscal year with a $26 million deficit, following a $44 million shortfall in the previous year. This financial crisis stems from the first full year of direct athlete compensation, where LSU spent the maximum allowed $21.5 million, combined with six years of cumulative overspending totaling $177.5 million. While football historically subsidized other sports, new coaching costs and roster investments have erased margins. Rousse emphasized the urgent need to stop the bleeding while preparing a new revenue-generation plan that includes a private-equity component tied to media rights, ensuring the university retains control of its brand. The university is also seeking state funding for academic priorities, but athletics remains the immediate financial emergency.
