Silent Toll at the Nepal-Tibet Border: Families Seek News After Flood Devastation
A glacier-triggered flood along the Nepal-Tibet border killed many and left thousands missing. Nepal reports about 4,216 missing, while China says far fewer are unaccounted on its side (541, including 261 foreigners), amid tightened information controls and punishments for ‘false information.’ Relatives rely on embassies, Nepal, and social media to locate loved ones, including workers on the Syaphrubesi–Rasuwagadhi Highway and other missing foreigners near Gyirong, as authorities on both sides struggle to provide clear updates.
