Van Dijk Calls Germany Goal 'Disgrace' After Controversial 1-1 Draw
The 2026/27 UEFA Nations League opened with a chaotic 1-1 draw between the Netherlands and Germany, marking the competitive debuts for managers Xavi Hernández and Jürgen Klopp. The match ended in a stalemate after Cody Gakpo scored a late equalizer for the Dutch, but the result was overshadowed by a contentious first-half goal for Germany. Virgil van Dijk labeled the German goal a 'disgrace,' arguing that play should have stopped when Dutch forward Brian Brobbey was injured. Germany’s Joshua Kimmich defended the decision to continue, calling the goal legal. Both teams suffered key injuries, with Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz leaving the field early for Germany, while Brobbey was substituted for the Netherlands. Despite the lack of technical polish, both managers expressed satisfaction with the energy displayed, with Klopp noting he felt they lost two points due to the timing of the concession.
