Non-linear optics experiments rely on crystals with special properties to convert light from one color to another. While large-scale research facilities use enormous crystals, a hobbyist has developed a simpler method using off-the-shelf deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP). By creating a saturated solution of KDP and allowing it to cool slowly, seed crystals can be grown. These crystals, when placed in the path of an infrared laser, produce a brilliant green laser output. Further steps could include polishing the crystals for better optical quality and growing even larger crystals.
