"Effective Nonchemical Methods Combat Herbicide-Resistant Weeds"

Researchers at the University of Arkansas have discovered that narrow-windrow burning, a nonchemical approach known for weed control in Australia, can effectively reduce the distribution of herbicide-resistant weed seeds in the soil. The study found that the duration of exposure and temperature needed to kill weed seeds decreased as temperature increased. Seed size also played a role, with smaller-seeded species showing complete mortality at lower temperatures. Narrow-windrow burning has the potential to be a cost-effective and valuable option for growers to reduce the number of herbicide-resistant weeds in their fields, as it destroys weed seeds that would otherwise contribute to the soil seed bank.
