A recent analysis published in Nature Ecology and Evolution reveals that nonnative earthworms from Europe and Asia have become dominant across 73 percent of North America, posing a serious threat to biodiversity and native ecosystems. The study documents the presence of 70 unique species of alien earthworm, with their introduction attributed to activities such as fishing bait and vermicomposting.
