Global Plan Aims to Cut Dementia by 45% Through Modifiable Factors
The World Health Organization released updated dementia guidelines anchored to a 2024 Lancet Commission finding that up to 45% of dementia cases are linked to 14 modifiable risk factors. If addressed at the population level, these factors—such as staying physically and socially active, not smoking, moderate alcohol intake, a heart-healthy diet, and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and weight—could delay or prevent many cases. The 45% figure is population-wide and not predictive for individuals, and some risks (e.g., lower education, air pollution) are harder to modify. Evidence for interventions like vision improvement or sleep modification to reduce risk is mixed. The WHO also advises against unproven supplements (vitamins B or E, omega-3s) for dementia prevention. Notably, hearing loss is linked to dementia, and treating it with hearing aids may slow cognitive decline in some high-risk older adults. The guidelines push for holistic, personalized strategies to protect cognitive health.
