Mayo Clinic has been granted a full exemption from a bill aimed at increasing nurse staffing levels in Minnesota, while all other hospitals will be required to form staffing committees made up equally of direct care workers and hospital leaders. The exemption comes after the hospital threatened to move billions of dollars in future investments out of the state if the bill was not gutted. The move has been criticized by the nurses' union and other hospital leaders, who argue that mandatory staffing minimums are necessary to improve patient outcomes and reduce burn-out. A separate bill aimed at reining in rising healthcare costs has also been watered down at the behest of Mayo Clinic.
