These rocks, also known as plastistones, pose a significant threat to ocean sustainability and human health. They are formed through various processes such as burning, physical adhesion, and chemical binding. The proportions of plastic polymers found in these rocks closely match those found in plastic waste. Plastic rocks may alter microbial communities and shed microplastics, further impacting ecosystems. The mass of plastic deposited by humans annually is substantial, and the problem of plastic pollution continues to grow.
