UAE's COP28: Battling Fake News and Fossil Fuel Promotion
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), host of the upcoming COP28 climate conference, has denounced what it calls "fake news" aimed at undermining its role. The UAE refuted claims that the president-designate of COP28, Sultan Al-Jaber, would step down from his position at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC). The country also denied reports that it planned to use the summit to lobby for oil and gas deals. The leaked documents, published by the Centre for Climate Reporting and the BBC, alleged that the UAE intended to discuss fossil fuel deals with 15 countries during the conference. COP28 is seen as a crucial opportunity to address the climate crisis amid rising global temperatures and extreme weather events.
