Wildfire season returns to Canada's oil sands, keeping output on edge

Wildfire activity has returned to northern Alberta's oil sands, with seven active blazes near Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche posing risks to communities and facilities. So far in 2026 there have been no significant disruptions, but past fires have forced substantial output losses and created production uncertainty. Heavy rain is forecast to aid firefighting, and while an evacuation alert for Conklin was lifted, officials say the risk remains extreme in the region.

"Alberta in State of Emergency as Wildfires Rage"

The Canadian province of Alberta has declared a state of emergency as wildfires worsen due to hot and dry weather, forcing 25,000 people to evacuate their homes. The state of emergency grants Alberta's government greater powers to respond to extreme situations, including mobilizing additional resources and unlocking emergency funds. Over 100 active wildfires are being dealt with, with several listed as out of control. More than 20 communities have been evacuated, and some 122,000 hectares have been ravaged by the fires so far. The hot and dry weather is forecasted to continue for the time being.
