
"Enhancing Telescope Vision: The Breakthrough Ultrablack Coating Unveiling More of the Universe"
Researchers from the University of Shanghai have developed an ultrablack thin-film coating for magnesium alloys used in telescopes and optical instruments, which absorbs nearly all light and is durable enough for space. Using a manufacturing technique called "atomic layer deposition," the coating consists of alternating layers of aluminum-doped titanium carbide and silicon nitride, preventing almost all light from reflecting off the surface. The coating absorbed 99.3% of light across a wide range of wavelengths, surpassing existing enhanced aluminum coatings. The team aims to further enhance the coating's light-absorption abilities to improve space telescopes' performance and capture more captivating images of the universe.
