Sony pivots Austrian disc plant to optical microlenses for future tech
Sony has invested €30 million ($34 million) to convert its Thalgau, Austria disc factory into a plant for optical microlenses as it shifts PlayStation toward digital. The facility currently produces about 600,000 discs per day (roughly half for PlayStation games), but management expects disc output to drop to around 10% by 2028 when a digital-only PlayStation begins; 300 workers will be retrained to produce microlenses, with production slated to start as soon as next year.
