"Revolutionary AI Lasers Clear Path for Space Debris Elimination"
Researchers are exploring the use of AI-powered lasers mounted on satellites or dedicated platforms to address the growing problem of space debris in low-Earth orbit. The lasers would monitor space debris objects and, when necessary, nudge them into safer orbits to prevent collisions with valuable assets like the International Space Station or satellites. NASA is funding the project, which aims to develop a network of reconfigurable space-based lasers and algorithms capable of making real-time decisions about which objects to target. This approach could be particularly useful as it can tackle space debris of any size and is advantageous compared to ground-based lasers, as it avoids atmospheric distortion.
