Kiama Library Receives 150-Year-Overdue Antiquities of Athens Book Found Bricked in Fireplace
A Greek antiquities book published in 1858 and catalogued as No. 506 in Kiama’s early public library was found bricked inside a sealed fireplace during home renovations and returned to Kiama Library about 150 years overdue. The late fine is estimated at around AUD 28,000 (about USD 19,500), based on an 1870s-era British three-pence-a-week rate. The library, which opened in 1872, has lost borrower records, so the last owner remains unknown. The book will be displayed in the local history collection and will not be loaned out again for another 150 years, according to Kiama Library Manager Michelle Hudson.
