An 11-year-old girl who had beaten cancer died from an overdose of pain medication after her hospital prescribed excessive doses instead of proper treatment, leading to a wrongful death lawsuit that resulted in a $20.5 million award to her family.
A new study shows that the migraine-preventive drug atogepant significantly reduces the occurrence of rebound headaches in people with chronic migraines. By taking atogepant daily, patients experienced fewer migraine days and reduced their need for additional pain medications, which are often the cause of rebound headaches. The study, led by Dr. Peter J. Goadsby, involved 755 participants and demonstrated that atogepant effectively alleviates migraine-related pain by relaxing blood vessels, preventing them from becoming too large and irritating the meninges.
Drug shortages are impacting Kentuckians, with pain medication and ADHD drugs among those in shortest supply. Independent pharmacies like Georgetown Pharmacy have been able to compensate better than big chains by ordering from secondary suppliers and keeping stockpiles of certain drugs. Patients, such as Peggy Carpenter, are struggling to access necessary medication, leading to concerns that some may turn to alcohol, heroin, or other illicit substances as alternatives. The cause of the shortages remains unclear.
Ensysce Biosciences has completed a clinical study on its first pain medication with overdose protection, PF614-MPAR, which successfully reduced opioid delivery when three or more doses are consumed simultaneously. The drug is potentially the first to limit opioid exposure when too many pills are swallowed, protecting against overdose. Ensysce's patented technology MPAR™, which ‘switches off' the active drug release, can limit delivery when excess was consumed. The study is a proof-of-concept for the base MPAR™ technology which could be used to control delivery of many other drug classes where there may be a narrow therapeutic range.
