First-time marathoner Rachel Apa dies of rhabdomyolysis near NYC finish line
Rachel Apa, 24, died on Nov. 1 after collapsing at mile 24 of the New York City Marathon. Diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle breakdown condition, she was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. A former Division I field hockey player, Apa was running her first marathon to raise funds for the Parkinson's Foundation in honor of her grandfather. Medical staff used a defibrillator at the scene after a bystander performed CPR. Her mother was waiting for her at mile 25 when she received news of the emergency. The incident highlights the risks of extreme exertion, with experts noting that heat and dehydration can exacerbate the condition.
