Verizon reported a Saturday outage that affected voice service for a limited number of customers in the East and parts of the Midwest, with Downdetector logging about 12,000 outage reports in a 3-hour span—mostly mobile-phone issues. The company said the disruption was resolved shortly after 6 p.m. ET, and users can check their area’s status on Verizon’s network status page.
AT&T has applied to end its landline phone obligations in California, drawing protest from residents and state officials. The California Public Utilities Commission is considering AT&T's request, with over 2,100 comments opposing the plan. Residents stress the importance of landlines for emergency services, especially in areas with no cell service. AT&T disputes claims that low-income households could see their bills double and that it intends to shut down its telephone network, stating that it will continue to offer basic telephone service unless it obtains necessary permission to stop.
Amazon is reportedly in talks with US-based phone carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Dish Network, to offer cheap or free phone service to Prime customers. Talks have been ongoing for six to eight weeks, but it may be a while before a deal is struck. This could be an interesting offer for Amazon customers, especially given the high cost of mobile plans in the US.
