Chile Unveils Plan to Seek Justice for Pinochet's Victims
Chile's government has unveiled a national search plan to locate the victims of forced disappearance and political execution during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, which lasted from 1973 to 1990. The plan aims to establish the circumstances of each disappearance, provide access to government records, and offer reparations and guarantees to the families of victims. This marks the first time the Chilean state has taken responsibility for the search, despite years of efforts by families and legal cases. Over 40,000 people are registered as victims of crimes under the Pinochet regime, with only 307 remains identified since the return to democracy. However, campaigners express concerns about the effectiveness of the plan without the cooperation of the armed forces, who claim to have no information.
