First officer warns captain: slow and a little low as United 169 clips NJ light pole
The NTSB released a preliminary report on United Airlines Flight 169, which struck a light pole during its approach to Newark Liberty International Airport, with debris injuring a southbound tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike. The first officer told the captain they were slow and low about 500 feet above ground; the runway had been changed three times during the approach, windshear alerts were not reported, and the aircraft landed safely with substantial damage to the lower left aft fuselage. No tire marks were observed on the truck.
