Port Sudan: A Haven for Those Fleeing Violence in Sudan

As fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, many have fled to Port Sudan, hoping to escape the conflict-struck country. Syrian refugees, including Mohamed, are making money by offering services such as haircuts or selling cigarettes. Despite the option to be evacuated out of the country by boat, Mohamed doesn’t want to leave Sudan and hopes to return to Khartoum or open an air conditioning shop in Port Sudan. A weeklong ceasefire has been agreed upon by the warring sides to ease the deadly conflict that has killed some 550 people, injured another 4,926, and displaced some 330,000.

US successfully evacuates Americans from Sudan in third convoy.

The US government has organized a third convoy to evacuate US citizens and others from Sudan, as the country descends into civil war. The US government had faced criticism for not evacuating its citizens earlier, but has since facilitated the departure of over 1,000 US citizens from Sudan. The US Secretary of State has suggested that US-organized convoys to evacuate Americans will continue as long as there are American citizens seeking assistance in leaving Sudan.
