Recent earthquakes in the USA may actually be aftershocks of massive earthquakes that occurred in the 1800s, according to a study by researchers from the University of Missouri and Wuhan University. By analyzing seismic data, the team found that up to 65% of seismic activity in the New Marid seismic zone between 1980 and 2016 is likely aftershocks of earthquakes that occurred in 1811-1812. The study suggests that aftershock sequences can last for decades to centuries, and understanding the distinction between current seismic activity and aftershocks could help predict future earthquake risks.
