Despite a shortage of semaglutide, the active ingredient in the weight loss drug Ozempic, in the UK, well-off individuals are still able to purchase the medication online for weight loss purposes, while diabetics who rely on the National Health Service (NHS) struggle to access government-paid prescriptions. A regulatory loophole allows doctors to prescribe the drug for weight loss, even during shortages. The shortage of Ozempic has led to diabetic patients experiencing unstable blood glucose levels and being forced to use riskier treatments like insulin. The shortage is expected to persist until mid-2024, according to the manufacturer Novo Nordisk.
