California Implements Produce Quarantine Due to Fruit Fly Invasion
Parts of Los Angeles County in California have been placed under a produce quarantine after the discovery of invasive Tau fruit flies. These flies, native to Asia, lay eggs on fresh produce, causing damage and making it unfit for consumption. The quarantine area measures about 79 square miles, and produce cannot be removed from the zone to prevent the spread of the fruit flies. The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working with other agencies to treat affected produce, and residents are advised to double-bag and properly discard produce waste.
