2025 Violent-C Crime Falls to Record Lows, FBI Data Show

The FBI’s 2025 data show the U.S. violent-crime rate fell 9.7%—the largest annual drop since 1936—with murders down 18.1%, robberies 18.5%, rapes 7.6%, and aggravated assaults 7.2%. The murder rate declined 18.5% to 4.1 per 100,000, tying 1955–56 lows. Property crime dropped 12.4% (vehicle theft −22.7%, burglary −15.8%, larceny −9.8%). The decline was broad across population groups and city sizes, based on data from 17,075 agencies covering about 96% of the population, with missing data estimated. No single policy or factor is credited for the drop.

San Francisco's Retail Landscape Continues to Crumble.

Elon Musk tweeted that downtown San Francisco feels "post-apocalyptic" due to the closure of many retail establishments, including Nordstrom's flagship store and a nearby Nordstrom Rack location. The closures have been blamed on unsafe conditions and rampant shoplifting, as well as changing retail shopping habits and a pivot to remote work that has emptied downtown of workers. While San Francisco statistically has less violent crime than other major cities, property crime remains high.
