Canada suspends mental illness assisted dying, prompting debate on terminal psychiatric care
Canada has indefinitely suspended its plan to expand medical aid in dying (MAiD) to individuals whose sole condition is mental illness, a decision announced on October 7, 2026. Justice Minister Simon Fraser cited concerns regarding inadequate access to mental health services and a recent report questioning whether mental illness can be definitively classified as incurable. While the government will instead focus on legislation for advance consent in physical illnesses, advocates argue that this suspension denies relief to patients with terminal psychiatric conditions who have exhausted all other treatment options. The decision highlights a global divide, as Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Luxembourg already permit MAiD for psychiatric distress, whereas Canada is now the only major jurisdiction to halt such expansion.
