Public Health France says France recorded roughly 5,700 excess deaths during an unprecedented early-summer heat wave, with the Paris region hardest hit and those 75+ accounting for about two-thirds of the toll; temperatures topped 104°F in many areas, and the event marked the highest heat-related excess mortality in more than two decades as Europe-wide deaths also rose.
France logged roughly 1,000 excess deaths during the peak of a record heatwave, with more than 1,200 deaths on Wednesday and more than 1,400 on each of the following two days; 85% of excess deaths were among people aged 65 and older, and red heat warnings covered about three-quarters of the country as data continue to be collected. The episode is part of a Europe-wide heatwave scientists say is linked to climate change, which is making such extreme temperatures more likely.
