Maria Ressa, co-founder of the online news site Rappler and a prominent journalist, has been acquitted of a tax evasion charge in the Philippines, marking another legal victory in her battle against multiple charges filed during the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa, a vocal critic of Duterte, has maintained that the cases against her and Rappler were politically motivated. The acquittal strengthens their resolve as they face two more court cases, including an appeal against a cyber-libel conviction. Ressa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.
