Apple confirmed to The Verge that the 'Restricted Mode' feature in iOS 27 will not be triggered by missed payments on its new Apple Upgrade leasing program. While the system exists in the OS to enforce financing agreements, Apple did not specify its intended use case, leaving open the possibility it targets third-party lender partnerships or specific international markets.
A beta of iOS 27 reportedly includes code to place financed iPhones in a “Restricted Mode,” cutting access to nearly all apps except essentials and using an App Managed Features system to check payment status; a new “Partner Finance Lock” could also prevent erasing or reselling the device. The feature is unofficial and could change before release, and Apple has not commented. Reports from 9to5Mac and Bloomberg noted related financing plans like the proposed Apple Upgrade program.
