Global news outlets unite for World News Day as trust hits record low

Over 1,000 news organizations, including the New York Times and Reuters, participated in World News Day on Monday to advocate for trusted journalism. The event was prompted by a Reuters Institute report showing global trust in news fell to 37% in 2026, a new low. Organizers argue that media rivals must cooperate to survive, as audiences increasingly rely on social media and AI for information.

Global trust in journalism sinks to record low, study finds

A Reuters Institute study of almost 100,000 people in 48 markets finds global trust in news at 37%, with the UK at 30% and the US at 25%, driven by anxiety over long-running issues like immigration and inflation; even as more people turn to social media and online video (77% watch weekly), confidence in those formats trails traditional outlets, and trust in AI-generated answers remains low.
