Shook Research Founder Admits $6M Payment to Fired Forbes Editor Was for Business Guidance
RJ Shook, founder of Shook Research, has publicly acknowledged that the $6 million payment sent to former Forbes Chief Content Officer Randall Lane was intended as compensation for business advice, not a personal gift. Shook stated that the transfer occurred after he sold his stake in the firm to PPC Enterprises in 2025, citing Lane's assistance in the sale process. Lane was fired by Forbes in August 2026 after the undisclosed payment became public, leading to an independent investigation into the integrity of the magazine's financial rankings. While Shook expressed regret for the 'mistake,' he maintained that the payment did not influence the independence of Shook Research's rankings. Forbes has confirmed it is reviewing its governance policies and has not found evidence that editorial integrity was compromised, though the incident has triggered a rebranding effort by Shook Research and a suspension of participation by major wealth management firms like Morgan Stanley.
