Unveiling the Dysregulation Process Behind Neurodegeneration: A Breakthrough in Motor Neuron Disease Research

A recent study published in Nature Neuroscience reveals a new RNA dysregulation process associated with the C9ORF72 gene mutation, which is linked to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The researchers found that reduced m6A modification in the C9ORF72 gene sequence leads to the accumulation of repeat RNAs and the production of toxic proteins associated with neurodegeneration. By increasing m6A methylation, the researchers were able to reduce the level of repeat RNAs and protect neurons. These findings could potentially lead to the development of more effective treatments for ALS and FTD.
